How do you make your pieces?
My ceramic pieces are usually hand-built with slabs, or coils, and sometimes slip cast. I am not a very technical ceramicist (any potter could tell you that), but I like to play around and experiment to figure out what works best for each piece.
For me what is important is the content - a piece could feel happy or dumb, or provide some sort of social commentary, but whether something is funny, whether it speaks to you in some other way - that's more important to my work than technical prowess.
Where do you find your inspiration?
My earliest creative inspiration probably came from watching cartoons, like Shin Chan, and Sailor Moon, and Disney movies, also playing games like Tekken, Pokemon and Crash Bandicoot! Lol. Their sense of narrative and fantasy is what appealed to me. I am still really into fantasy and sci fi. The Matrix, Akira and Ghost in the shell are my favourite films.
What can we learn on your ceramics courses?
The course covers a number of basic techniques, but mostly it is about enabling creativity and providing a strong foundation on which you can experiment, and make whatever you like! Mugs, pots, dogs, dragons, whatever you can imagine. Working with clay is super fun and relaxing, it is actually commonly used in therapeutic processes. And I believe that having an outlet for creativity is extremely empowering. It's in our instincts to play!
What makes you pretty tough?
I am actually pretty sensitive and a nerd. But my mum, who brought me and my sister up on her own, always encouraged us to carve our own paths, and embrace being different. We are both still sensitive nerds, but those values have been very useful to me, and my mum continues to inspire me today.
What does Baby G mean to you?
I always wanted a Baby G when I was younger, 15 years on now and we're collaborating! Mama I've made it!
